Group B Strep

I am committed to raising awareness about Group B Strep, or GBS, until a vaccine is made available. Dr. Carol Baker at Baylor is actively working towards a vaccine, as is Novartis. In mid-2014 Novartis had several sites set up to do preliminary phase III trials on the maternal GBS vaccine.

Here are some websites that provide a lot of information about GBS.

  1. We used to give C Section Moms a dose of antibiotics at cord clamping. Then everyone got all in a tizzy to give pre operative doses of antibiotics to ALL operative cases.. even C Section Moms.. Why can't we wait until after that cord is clamped for those babies that go to the NICU? Because they are given that antibiotic, their cultures are negative so Docs have no idea what is going on. This is a tragic reason we should not do cookie-cutter antibiotics to pre operative patients. I am so sorry this happened to you. GBS is unfortunately a normal flora so a vaccine could do more harm than good.. I will be performing some random acts of kindness that week.. What a lovely way to celebrate her life!
